Oil prices decline as Middle East diplomacy eases supply fears

Renewed talks involving Iran and regional powers raised hopes of de-escalation, though continued Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia limited the decline in crude prices.

Oil prices moved lower on Tuesday, October 27, as a renewed diplomatic effort to end the war between the United States and Iran eased concerns about energy supplies. The talks encouraged hopes that tensions could subside across the wider Middle East, where Tehran-backed Houthi militants have been attacking Saudi Arabia.

Brent crude futures for December delivery fell 0.87% to $114.80 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures for June delivery dropped 0.86% to $100.88 a barrel. The declines reflected reduced fears of further disruption to global energy supplies as regional governments pursued discussions aimed at containing the conflict.

The price retreat came after officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan and Iran met in Tehran on Monday. Those discussions formed part of an intensified diplomatic push to reduce tensions across the region. The prospect of progress helped ease supply concerns, although the possibility of a durable settlement remained uncertain.

Saudi Arabia said the meeting was intended to preserve channels for diplomacy and prevent hostilities from escalating again. According to Iranian state media, the four countries agreed to maintain their engagement in support of regional peace and security. Continued dialogue was therefore part of the effort outlined after the Tehran talks.

The diplomatic activity followed comments by U.S. President Donald Trump that left open the possibility of either an agreement or more military action. Speaking to Fox News on Sunday, Trump said he was nearing a decision on whether to reach a deal with Iran or intensify military operations, indicating that further attacks were still an option.

Qatar was also involved in the renewed contacts with Tehran. Representatives of the country traveled to the Iranian capital on Sunday, Reuters reported. Qatar has helped mediate negotiations between Washington and Tehran, placing that visit alongside the other diplomatic efforts under way.

Despite the renewed engagement, the oil market's losses were limited. Iran-backed Houthi militants continued attacking Saudi Arabia over the weekend, underscoring the fragility of prospects for a lasting resolution. Tuesday's trading reflected both the hope that diplomacy could curb further supply disruptions and the uncertainty surrounding efforts to bring the regional conflict under control.
