Jay-Z to Headline Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show, and the Hints Were There

Jay-Z, who rapped about turning down the Super Bowl in 2018, will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show at SoFi Stadium after a year of stadium appearances and anniversary shows.

Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, bringing one of hip-hop's deepest catalogs to football's biggest stage. The announcement is a notable turn for an artist who rapped in 2018 that he had said no to the Super Bowl and did not need the NFL.

The move is less of a surprise than it may seem. Roc Nation, the entertainment company Jay-Z founded in 2008, has been the NFL's "live music entertainment strategist" since August 2019. Through that partnership, the rapper has helped shape the halftime show from behind the scenes, starting with the Shakira and Jennifer Lopez performance at Super Bowl LIV in 2020. After headliners that included Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny, the man helping assemble the show is now putting himself on the bill.

Looking back, several moments over the past year read like a warmup. In 2025, Jay-Z made three surprise appearances on wife Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter Tour, in Paris, Atlanta and Las Vegas. His June 22 appearance at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta was the couple's first live performance together in seven years, and the set list included their 2003 hit "Crazy in Love." He also joined the July 26 tour finale at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

This year, he returned to headlining in Philadelphia. Announced March 17, his Roots Picnic set on May 30 was his first solo headlining show since at least 2019, and it was preceded by an invite-only show the night before at The Foundry. Philadelphia is familiar ground: he launched the Made in America festival there in 2012, turning Labor Day weekend on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway into a recurring gathering for major artists.

The Roots Picnic also brought a reunion. Jay-Z welcomed longtime Philly-based collaborators including Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Peedi Crakk, Memphis Bleek and the Young Gunz. He also debuted a new look, an afro in place of his freeform locs, which honored his father, who often wore the same style.

Next came a milestone celebration. With 2026 marking 30 years of "Reasonable Doubt" and 25 years of "The Blueprint," Jay-Z and Roc Nation announced on March 18 a three-night run at Yankee Stadium. By July 10, he was onstage for the first of three sold-out hometown shows, wearing his signature low-cut Caesar.

The haircut drew attention among fans. He told GQ in 2006 that he usually does not cut his hair while recording, and in a 2023 interview on "CBS Mornings" with Gayle King, he said he was "working through whether to cut it or not." Earlier this year, Beyoncé shared in a video titled "The Blueprint" that Jay-Z first grew his hair to support their daughter Blue Ivy, then 5, as she struggled with confidence in her own hair. During the July 11 show, Pharrell Williams noted the change, saying, "They poked the bear and now the bear cut his hair."

The anniversary celebrations later went international, with September stops in London and Paris announced in June and July. The tour then returned to the United States for an Oct. 23 show at SoFi Stadium, the home of Super Bowl LXI. In hindsight, that date looks like another clue that the rapper's road led to the halftime stage.
