Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, leaving his Mercedes teammate George Russell with a single opportunity to stay in the Formula One title fight. The 20-year-old Italian crossed the finish line at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, in 1:35:16.650, securing his ninth victory of the season.

Charles Leclerc from Monaco finished second, trailing the winner by 13.078 seconds. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing took third place, finishing 17.485 seconds behind Antonelli. The race spanned 56 laps and featured a strategic divergence that defined the result. While most competitors made two pit stops, Antonelli remained on track until Lap 25. He made a single stop and did not return to the pit lane for the remainder of the race.

Antonelli credited his engineers for the gamble. "It was a perfect way to end the weekend; it was an incredible team effort, especially from strategy to believe in me and go for one stop," he said. The move gave him a cushion that no other driver could close. A Virtual Safety Car activated on Lap 52 after Valtteri Bottas's Cadillac stopped on the track. The caution remained in effect until the penultimate lap, a period that prevented any rival from catching the leader.

With five races remaining on the calendar, Antonelli's lead over Russell has grown to 123 points. Russell must win the next race in Mexico City to keep his championship hopes alive. If he finishes second or lower, the title will belong to Antonelli. Verstappen, a four-time champion from 2021 to 2024, is now mathematically out of the race. He will go two years without a world title.

Verstappen acknowledged the pace deficit. "Our overall pace was not good enough, and the tyres we had available were not the right ones," he said. He noted that the late-race Virtual Safety Car may have helped preserve his podium finish. Mercedes also widened its gap in the constructors' standings. The team now holds 607 points compared to Ferrari's 474, a lead of 133 points with five races left.

Antonelli has won both United States races on this year's calendar, including a victory in Las Vegas in November. Team principal Toto Wolff called the Austin performance the best of Antonelli's career. "Getting off the start with the inferior tyre and then controlling it at all times. The race of a champion who isn't the champion yet, but exceptional," Wolff said. Wolff added that Antonelli has outperformed the car, while Antonelli noted that execution on Sunday surpassed his previous wins.

Antonelli acknowledged the title is close but said his mindset remains unchanged. "I'm aware [securing the championship] is close, but the mindset doesn't change. I want to finish the season on a high, to go into 2027 with high hopes," he said.
