The Trump administration has proposed former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as its candidate for United Nations secretary-general. The move relies on securing backing from Russia and China in the Security Council.

The White House did not merely support Orbán's interest in the race. According to the Wall Street Journal, US officials suggested the candidacy to him. A State Department official acknowledged the proposal appears unusual but noted that Moscow and Beijing likely support the idea. The administration views Orbán as a potential joint candidate for the three powers.

US officials count on a specific voting bloc to advance the nomination. One State Department representative identified eight Security Council members who would support Orbán comfortably. Officials believe the team can secure another ten votes out of the fifteen council members. They argue that when the US, Russia, and China pursue the same goal, they generally achieve it.

The selection process prioritized political alignment over traditional diplomatic experience. One American official described Orbán as the dream MAGA-conservative candidate. This assessment stems from his policies regarding mass migration, liberal NGOs, and left-leaning courts. He also maintains a pro-China orientation while clashing with the European Union. Officials noted that while other candidates have extensive bureaucratic backgrounds, Orbán represents a different profile.

A representative from another country described the remaining candidates as heavy on the secretary side of the title. They possess experience in international bureaucracy or behind-the-scenes diplomacy. In contrast, Orbán would be a general. A State Department representative agreed with this distinction. He said Orbán adheres to the correct ideology and knows how to exercise power under hostile conditions. He will not be intimidated by the establishment.

President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to support the candidacy. However, sources familiar with the process say the official announcement is being held back until after the US midterm elections. American officials contacted Orbán to gauge his interest. He was positively inclined but included caveats in his response.

The proposal arrives amid ongoing criticism of the UN Security Council. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently called for reforms to strengthen accountability mechanisms. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul have also pushed for changes. Wadephul specifically criticized the council for its inability to make decisions due to vetoes by individual members.
